The West launches its first assault in the War of Propaganda
Like most of you in America, I received this film in the mail and without any warning. Immediately I recognized it for what it was, propaganda – I served in Military Intelligence and recognize Psy-Ops when I see it. Still, I was intrigued, I am the same guy who in college purchased the Capra series, “Why We Fight” for about five bucks because it was cheap and because the power of propaganda has always interested me.
The power of propaganda is exactly what this film is trying to invoke, images of goose-stepping Nazis, or Muslims, brandishing scimitars hungry for Judeo-Christian blood marching on the White House. I popped it in the DVD player expecting to really be disturbed and moved by what I saw – I wasn’t really. For all the hype and disclaimers, I was expecting a more “gloves-off” telling of the jihadists’ war on the West.
Again, I am a guy who took fun classes like Genocide, War and Violence, and Oral Interpretation in college – did I mention I was diverse? And being a normal American guy, it takes a lot to shock me, we are a culture of students desensitized to violence and graphic images. If you are looking for a Faces of Death type film, you won’t get that with Obsession, it is nothing you couldn’t find on some of the Independent film channels – albeit with a less liberal agenda to be sure.
Politics is all about persuasion, and propaganda is a tool of persuasion to remedy an identified disease on the citizens as interpreted by the creator of the propaganda. It really is that simple.
The message of Obsession is clear, wake up or rest in peace. If anyone watched this film and it changed their life, I would love to hear about it, but if you really studied the horrors of evil doers, as I have my whole life, Obsession is nothing to write home about.
It wasn’t authentic enough, it was too CNN and mainstream American media. Here in the US, when we report on a story of a bombing, we wait until the police have removed the body as not to offend our delicate viewers – but really, who are we protecting when the graphic images of the removed body are just a mouse click away?
Let me be crystal clear here too, any religion that truly thinks that a divine creator needs them to go around and kill in their name is a religion doomed to fail. I quote Captain James T. Kirk, “Excuse me, what does God need with a ship?”
I appreciate all the supportive comments, but I want to keep this site geared to non-political banter, and more about the films. I had a political site in college, and anyone who knows me, knows I am far from a bleeding heart liberal. To Political Hawk I have only this to say, and then I will say no more – read my bio, and read my comments on Religulous, and then realize that you are wrong on so many levels. If you want to comment on actual reviews we have written and/or previews of films upcoming, feel free, but personal attacks just make you look dumb.
PH, so let me get this straight…you are taking a stance which is similar to radical Islamic extremists, but without Islam, …so that makes you just a radical extremists, right? However, since you’re views lack any religious base, and is obviously just a rant based on ignorance disguised as patriotism, that makes you less dangerous and just a faithful countryman, right? Sorry to disappoint you PH, but extremism is extremism, no matter what stint it takes. You sound pretty extreme to me, not a countryman. Hope you never subscribe to a particular religion, especially Islam. You would definitely end up on a “Most Wanted” list. Who knows, perhaps you already are?

PH, did you even READ the review? I’ve reread it about 15 times and I still can’t find where Rick is coming off “anti-american” and where he takes the side of islamic extremists.
