What would you do if your dog and cat talked to you? In February 2015, Jerry heard what his pets had to say, but were they giving him the best advice?
Directed by: Marjane Satrapi
Cast: Ryan Reynolds as Jerry/Mr. Whiskers (voice), Bosco (voice), Deer (voice), Bunny Monkey (voice), Gemma Arterton as Fiona, Anna Kendrick as Lisa, Jacki Weaver as Dr. Warren and Ella Smith as Alison.
Jerry goes to work every day, just like everyone else then goes home to feed his pets. He’s just a seemingly normal guy by all appearances. What everyone doesn’t know is that Jerry suffers from hallucinations, but that’s ok because his cat Mr. Whiskers and his dog Bosco talk him through it when things get rough. So, after Jerry is stood up on a date he has with a co-worker named Fiona, things go… kind of south for Jerry, he finds himself looking to Mr. Whiskers and Bosco for advice.
Here’s one that could easily slip under your radar, and it would be a shame if that happened, because you would be missing out on some oddly fun entertainment. The reason I say it could slip by unseen is the flick was released on VOD (video on demand) with a limited release in theaters back in February (2015). It made about $5,000 from the opening weekend.
Writer Michael R. Perry came up with a dark comedy that will have you wondering where it’s all going, but also laughing most of the way through this crazy story. I have to admit, I wasn’t quite sure where it was all going when I was watching it. The story seemed pretty straight forward, and it wasn’t hard to figure out how it was going to end, but every now and then Perry would throw a curve with some clever writing, which makes you second guess what the outcome might be.
I really enjoyed the play through, right from the start, I was hooked. Between the storyline and the cast performance, this one turned out to be a gem that makes you question what is real. The characters are fun but also awkward to watch. I liked that there was enough character development that you start to feel bad for certain characters as the story unfolds.
The cast did great, and Reynolds did an amazing job with his character. After catching a few of Reynolds’… not so big Hollywood flicks, I have to say he does a lot better in smaller films where he gets a chance to show just how much talent he has, and that he’s not just the “funny guy.” Also, Arterton and Kendrick bring some killer talent to the table with their roles.
Overall, if you haven’t heard of this one, find it and give it a go. I will warn you however, things get a little bit bloody here and there, but nothing extremely gory. Unless you consider a severed talking head extremely gory.
