There was a new Robocop made, God only knows why. The first Robocop was spectacularly violent and bleak, a future that paraded itself as a society free of turmoil and crime, but actually hyper-violence, that most would have to wince away from, was the order of the day. Director Paul Verhoeven delivered a wake-up call for citizens of the 1980’s that they owed their police a lot more than just taxes and the occasional free coffee and donut. Without those very human beings willing to put their lives on the line, it would turn to the machines (heartless problem-solvers) that could easily replace the over-burdened police force. And, in true 1980’s fashion, the evil corporations, well specifically Amazon, errr, I mean Omni Consumer Products (OCP) was behind it all!
The sequels were decent, but the original Robocop was the best, and I haven’t even watched the re-boot, even though a copy of it sits on my DVR, daring me. Here’s the late and great H-Man’s take on the cheap knock-off though, directed by some guy named Jose Padilha.
See, the original featured a gang of bad guys led by Red (Kurtwood Smith), well, he’s Boddicker in Verhoeven’s Robocop, and the first time I watched That 70’s Show, I was just waiting for Red to snap and show up to the garage with a bazooka or a table saw! Those punks are lucky Red didn’t go completely psycho until well after the ’70s, ha ha!
While we are fast approaching the year when the rip-off Robocop was set in, 2028, I think humanity still has an edge up on our robot masters. Because true to the first version of Robocop, this one also killed itself!
