May Harryhausen!
All this month, Comet TV is featuring classic Ray Harryhausen films of special effects yesteryear. AND we are hosting a Ray Harryhausen swag bag giveaway!
Our winner will get everything pictured here. Gotta admit, I am most partial to those skeleton warrior figures. Directions for contest entry are below.
I watched so many Sinbad movies as a kid, they all kind of blended together. But back then Harryhausen’s stuff was already considered classic effects thanks to this little space movie that revolutionized the industry. Still, Sinbad was always on some voyage and fighting off skeletons, but there was something romantic about his voyages that is mostly lost with today’s storytellers. If you haven’t seen even one Sinbad film, now’s your chance.
Also, make sure you know your Sinbads . . .
But, it isn’t all Harryhausen at Comet TV this month, they have a few more cult classics in store for you.
Labyrinth – A scary fairy tale featuring Jim Henson’s Muppets and groundbreaking effects work through the use of multiple operators to work Hoggle. It’s a cult classic with David Bowie as the Goblin King, a character that reminds us we should be careful what we wish for, because someone (or something) is always listening. A particularly creepy stand-out scene is one that used to give me the skincrawls as a kid, the old bag lady who looks unsurprisingly similar to Audra from Henson’s The Dark Crystal, which incidentally is another great not so kid friendly Muppet film.
The Bride – The mid ’80s was a time when movie makers were trying to become more significant, less focus on the principle work that the ’80s is known for, The Bride is all about Frankenstein’s Monster getting laid.
Troll and Troll 2 – well, you can’t really lump these two together. While technically speaking Troll 2 is a sequel to Troll, the only thing that really connects them is the title.
Troll was a magical horror film, a fairy tale that reminds us to stay the hell away from witches and our hero Harry Potter, yes, really, has to contend with half-naked Julia Louis-Dreyfus and some other not so nymph like monsters in his new flat. It’s got some original music that got me into Gregorian chanting for about a decade. It’s rich in its storytelling and I highly recommend it.
Troll 2 – Where do I start? One of these days I will need to write a full review of both these films.
