FREE STUFF, WITCHES!
Back in 1996, we were introduced to a coven of witches led by the pragmatic Sarah Bailey (Robin Tunney) whose sudden appearance in town sparks an awakening in several outcast teen girls who just want to fit in. It can be argued The Craft launched the “goth” look, and it represents a revolution of powerful female characters who aren’t afraid to take what they want. But, of course, there is a price to pay for that power – there always is.
The coven:
Bonnie (Neve Campbell) has far worse problems; she was burned and has scars over her entire back that are literally excruciating to treat. Those scenes are difficult to watch, as you really feel for Bonnie’s character. And Rochelle (Rachel True) is their friend who has to deal with everyday, casual racism from the uppity white girls, who are taking their cues from Laura (Christine Taylor). Oh, and there is some bullshit with Skeet Ulrich, I guess.
As their powers grow, the coven starts to use their powers for more than just “righting wrongs” – as the saying goes, absolute power corrupts absolutely, and in The Craft that is multiplied by the power of three. It’s odd, ever since I saw this film, I have kind of believed in this theory, that whatever you wish or whatever you conjure up against someone else will come back to you, threefold.
As the story unfolds, each girl has to struggle with the reality that they can’t change their destinies, but not all of them accept this reality.
