Filming has begun on best-selling author, Donna Tartt’s “The Goldfinch” which is scheduled to release in October 2019 through Warner Bros. Pictures and Amazon Studios.
I am not familiar with this novel myself, but it is being directed by BAFTA Award winner John Crowley (“Brooklyn”) and stars Ansel Elgort (“Baby Driver”) as Theo Decker and Academy Award winner Nicole Kidman (“The Hours,” “Big Little Lies”) as Mrs. Barbour.
“The Goldfinch” is being produced by Nina Jacobson (“The Hunger Games” films, “American Crime Story”) and Brad Simpson (“World War Z,” “American Crime Story”). The screenplay is by Oscar nominee Peter Straughan (“Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy”).
Uh-oh! There’s the first red flag for me, I was not a fan of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy!
I am intrigued by the story as I understand it. Theodore “Theo” Decker was 13 years old when his mother was killed in a bombing, and the tragedy changes him and his life’s path. Through all his pain, he holds on to one tangible piece of hope from that day…a painting of a tiny bird chained to its perch. The Goldfinch.
Sounds like a great story, let’s see what Straughan can do with it.
