Now, coming to your home! – April 1/April 5
You don’t understand how spoiled you are. When I was a kid, I saw my first ever VHS movie at my friend’s house, and it was . . . you guessed it, Star Wars: A New Hope. Or, as I called it then, just Star Wars! And that was probably 1979, so it took two years to be available “In-Home”, as the cool kids are now saying. I went home and told my dad that I just watched Star Wars and he actually told me not to lie to him, he didn’t even know what the hell a VHS was. Can you imagine that, the concept of an In-Home viewing was so foreign to us, he thought I was just making it up! If it wasn’t on HBO (which only the rich folks had back then) then you just never saw it.
I can remember wondering how long it would be before a sequel would come out. And then when it finally did come out, it was (as I recall) years before you could see it at home. It wasn’t released right away on VHS nor HBO. Of course, I am speaking of one of the most talked about films of all time, The Empire Strikes Back. And by the time Return of The Jedi was released the cycle was a little less plodding, and so it has gone on since. Every decade we get more and more spoiled, and I love it!! I am not complaining, I just wish some of you kids had to endure the struggle us older farts had to . . . I think it would give you a much more rounded appreciation of what it means to love a film.
Now, Disney and Lucasfilm are releasing a Digital HD (DMA) copy of the most watched film of 2015, The Force Awakens, on April 1st . . . no fooling! And the next week (right before my birthday) they are releasing it on Blu-ray. Happy Birthday to me! And here’s some of the features you’ll get to see In-Home that, obviously, weren’t available in the theater:
