Nightcrawler: Is the directorial debut of screenwriter Dan Gilroy (The Bourne Legacy, Real Steel), and stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Rene Russo, Bill Paxton, and Riz Ahmed.
Set in Los Angeles, this thriller centers around a young man (Gyllenhaal) who is drawn into the nocturnal world of crime journalism. Produced by Bold Films, Nightcrawler has been picked up for U.S. distribution by Open Road Films, who have in recent years released such films as Joe Carnahan’s The Grey and David Ayers’ End of Watch. A theatrical release date has not yet been announced.
My H-Impression: Virtually nothing is known about the plot at this time, aside from the sentence long blurb in the press release, though the phrase “nocturnal world of crime journalism” certainly grabbed my attention. Gyllenhaal has appeared in enough quality projects as of late (Prisoners, Source Code) for me to surmise that his taste in material is quite sound. As for director Gilroy, The Bourne Legacy was the one Bourne sequel I actually liked, and I was very pleasantly surprised by Real Steel from 2011, so I would say he has proven himself as a writer.
Overall, from what little we’ve been told about Nightcrawler, it does sound intriguing. It’s one I definitely want to know more about, and I will be keeping an eye out for it in the coming months.
