Back when Braveheart came out, my dad joked about how when he was a kid, William Wallace was always portrayed as the bad guy with the Scottish invaders instigating with the English. And watching that film introduced me to a character I had never heard of before, but was instantly drawn to, Robert the Bruce.
My dad, the self-labeled font of useless information, told me what he was most famous for is a saying that I probably won’t reveal here, lest I spoil his fate. Robert the Bruce is a fascinating historical figure, and I can’t wait to see this film starring Chris Pine as the rebel who would be King of Scotland.
[Swift aside: Oh wow, I just found out that Chris Pine’s father is none other than Robert Pine. Not sure what you will know him from, but for me, it’s as the Sergeant in CHiPs, but he has over 220 acting credits on IMDb – so you will recognize him from something.]
Also starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, best known to American audiences from Kick-Ass, but he proved to me he has impressive range with his role as John Lennon in Nowhere Boy, a film I highly recommend you check out. I am not at all familiar with the young actress, Florence Pugh who will be playing Elizabeth de Burgh.
I see this one is directed by David Mackenzie who impressed the shit out of me with Hell or High Water, also starring Pine. I am a little worried he might not be able to pull off something with such a grand scale, but the trailer does give me hope. When I see a ‘Mac’ name that means Scottish, so yea, you know he is gonna do his level best to make an outstanding film.
With plenty of comic book movies out there right now, it is always refreshing to see filmmakers tackle boring old history and try to make it meaningful to movie lovers. I mean, it was watching historical movies and series that led to my love of history. So I like to imagine some middle-school kid out there will see this movie and understand why history is important and fall in love with the past.
And you can bet your ass I will be reviewing this film, so stay tuned to FilmGrouch.com and on our social media, or better yet, subscribe here and make sure you don’t miss it!
