What, in the general fuck, is going on at Marvel?
I recently read this story, yes on Fox News – so what? . . . that Thor is going to be a woman. Or maybe, more appropriately, he will cisgender as a woman, who was born a male. That is, if we consider his birth, of Norse lore, to be his true gender identity. Now some jackwagon at Marvel has determined that Mjölnir is sexist or something, because it says “HE” on the hammer, only if HE be worthy. So, per the writer, “This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is THOR!”
I’ve been all over twitter screaming about how much this pisses me off, and yea, I know it shouldn’t with all the other horrible shit going down now in the real world – but, seriously, is nothing sacred anymore? There are plenty of strong female characters in both Marvel and D.C. Comics – there is certainly room for more. For instance, I caught this movie with my kid on Netflix recently, Next Avengers: Heroes of Tomorrow, featuring a character named Torunn Thorsdottir. For the dimwitted, that would be Thor’s DAUGHTER! Torunn is a serious bad ass in her own right. So, why not give HER a solid book, Jason Aaron? Is it because you can’t afford a last name?
Mind you, I don’t actually read comic books anymore, except for Nathan Edmondson’s, digitally. I have people that read other stuff for me now. So, most of my comic book exposure comes directly from film or other sources. And, I will not be adding Jason Aaron’s, anything, to my exception list. Perhaps there will be a smattering of folks that will buy this series, but, why? Aaron is doing what a lot of semi-talented writers do these days, take an established character and flip the switch . . . in this case, AC/DC, actually, just to get attention and curious readers. Will it work? Well, it got my attention, obviously. I probably would have given a Torunn series a shot. It’s sad, really, that gender has become a political topic at all. True gender equality would demand no special attention.
The world is going mad, mad I tell you! Look, I didn’t care when they made Dr. Watson a chick, on TV, because, let’s face it, there have been tons of iterations of Holmes. And before you attack me as a genderist, or some other damned made up word, consider this . . . think of something that is special to you, not just a character, something perhaps a bit sacred, ok, got it? Good, now imagine some writer comes along and says that he, or she, will change the gender, or the race, or even the species (I mean that weird horse-Thor, Beta Ray Bill), just to make the world a more diverse place and to garner attention that they wouldn’t otherwise warrant? It might irk you too, no?
Yea, I admit, I may be getting bent out of shape over something a bit dumb, but whenever these little things happen, there is a social shift that eventually becomes a much bigger agenda that traditional thinking is somehow . . . evil, and that ain’t good, folks. Imagine the outrage if we took Wonder Woman and made her a man, or Black Widow, or Elsa? Maybe then my weird rant will make sense? Hope that explains it a bit better, CDizzle.
