The H-Bomb: He’s taken on such incendiary real world topics as the Vietnam War, Nixon, Bush, 9/11, and the Kennedy assassination, to list a few, now Academy Award-winning filmmaker Oliver Stone will be taking on NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden in the ingeniously titled Snowden. Set for a December 25th release by Open Road Films, this sure-to-be-controversial project has begun filming in Munich, Germany, and will continue shooting in numerous locations around the world through May.
With a script by Stone and Kieran Fitzgerald (The Homesman), adapted from the books, “The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World’s Most Wanted Man”, by Luke Harding and “Time of the Octopus”, by Snowden attorney, Anatoly Kucherena, the film will star Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Snowden, Shailene Woodley, Academy Award-winner Melissa Leo, Zachary Quinto, Tom Wilkinson, Rhys Ifans, Joely Richardson, and Timothy Olyphant. A hefty ensemble, to be sure, though Stone has always attracted top drawer talent to his projects, and this one is no different.
Whether you consider Snowden a hero or a traitor, his story is an undeniably fascinating one, and in the hands of Oliver Stone, I am expecting great things. We shall see…
