God help them!
Most college students, when they learn that their scholarship has expired and they have a large tuition bill, would get a few jobs to pay for it, maybe take out some loans, or as a last resort, ask their parents for help. The last thing you would expect anyone to do would be to set up a fake religious charity and embezzle money from it. That seems like the fastest way to earn you a ticket straight to hell. Led by the very charming Sam (Alex Russell), he and his group of college buddies Pierce (Miles Fisher), Tyler (Sinqua Walls), and Baker (Max Adler) do just that. It starts out small, a charity called Get Wells Soon, to earn enough money to pay their tuition and maybe a little extra, until they meet Ken (Christopher McDonald), who invites them to join his touring religious performance company, Cross Country. The fact that he has a pretty assistant, Callie (Johanna Braddy), helps make their decision easy.
At first, they know nothing about Christianity but they set out to learn, and then teach each other what they learn. This part was funny. After awhile they become experts, and their stars are rising. They even start a clothing line – Cross Dressing. They are on top and they are loving it. They KNOW what they are doing is wrong, and they do have consciences. But they aren’t really jerks or mean about it, so you can’t hate them too much. They just got swept up in all the Jesus-loving, even after meeting Gabriel (Zachary Knighton), who is on tour with them and dazzles everyone with his low-cut v-neck shirts and his songs about Jesus.
I wasn’t sure what to expect from Believe Me. I honestly never saw any advertising or previews for it. Not overly preachy, quite humorous, not too offensive, with many musical montages (it seemed like there were more montages than a lot of other movies and who doesn’t love a montage?), it turns out that it wasn’t a terrible way to spend 90 minutes. I would watch this one again, and I would recommend it to others and not be ashamed I did.
