I’m pretty sure everyone has wondered at some point, what it would be like to be a cop. Or maybe you played Cops and Robbers as a kid. What would it be like to have the power to arrest someone, or administer a sobriety test, or participate in a stake-out. In Let’s Be Cops, it was scarily easy to get away with cop impersonation!!
Ryan (Jake Johnson) and Justin (Damon Wayans Jr) are college roommates who peaked in college. After a night out singing karaoke to a terrible Backstreet Boys song (ugh) the guys are involved in a hit and run. Too bad the other car contains members of a Russian mob. The guys manage to escape mostly unharmed.
Justin works at a video game design company and his ideas are pretty much ignored. Ryan coaches kids’ football. Actually, he just plays football with kids. Justin’s latest video game idea is for a first-person game where the player’s character is a cop. For research, he has realistic-looking cop uniforms. When the guys are invited to a costume party, Justin borrows the uniforms and the guys masquerade as cops.
The guys soon realize that people think they are actually cops. First a bachelorette party on a scavenger hunt mistake them for real cops and use them to cross an item off their list. Then they decide to administer the craziest sobriety test ever. While on a pretend stake-out, they end up on a real breaking and entering call with Segars (Rob Riggle), a cop in the local precinct. He believes they are part of his precinct and brings them along into the store where the B&E is taking place. What happens next is pretty crazy!!
Once they got a taste of how it felt to be important, Ryan couldn’t forget it. He learned all about proper cop training…from youtube. He even bought a police car off ebay for them to drive around in. And he promoted himself to sergeant. Justin didn’t want to continue the ruse but Ryan just couldn’t let it go. They ended up getting deeper and deeper into the lie. Until they got entangled with the Russian mob again, from the earlier hit and run.
Rob Riggle keeps you guessing throughout the film. You’re not really sure if he’s a good guy or a bad guy, and I won’t spoil it for you. It was nice to see Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans Jr portraying characters other than the ones on New Girl. Nina Dobrev also stars as Josie, a waitress that Justin has the hots for.
It’s not a secret that I love silly movies. White Chicks is one of my favorites. Let’s Be Cops is in that category. There were a lot of funny, outrageous scenes that will keep you laughing throughout. This is a good summer comedy to see with friends if you want to have a good time and laugh a lot!
