Maura (Poehler) and Kate Ellis (Fey) are the most opposite sisters ever. Maura is a nurse, optimistic, careful, and always very responsible, while Kate is unemployed, homeless, and the single mother of a teenage daughter. While Maura is somewhat recently divorced, she has her life a whole lot more together than Kate. Maura has regular Skype calls with their parents Bucky (James Brolin) and Deana (Dianne Wiest). During one call, Bucky and Deana announce that they have put their house on the market, they need Maura to come clean out her room, oh and can she also tell Kate too, because she is a bit of a hothead.
The girls head to Orlando and to their childhood home. Along the way, they meet a new neighbor, James (Ike Barinholtz) whom Maura is instantly attracted to, but she doesn’t really know how to show it. It gets pretty awkward. When they finally make it to the house, they discover it’s already been sold, and mostly packed up – everything except for their bedroom. It looks the same as any teenager’s room from the ’80s, with posters of “E.T.”, “Jem”, Michael J. Fox, and other random colorful objects. They have a good time reminiscing, but they are having a very hard time coming to terms with the fact that the house is being sold.
They decide to throw one last huge bash, a party like they used to throw in their younger days. They invite all their high school friends, and the guest list includes many current and former “Saturday Night Live” cast members, with Alex (Bobby Moynihan), Kelly (Rachel Dratch), and Sam (Kate McKinnon). Not included on the guest list is Brinda (Maya Rudolph), whom Kate loathes. Since Maura is always the “Party Mom” (responsible one), she asks Kate to be the Party Mom this time so she can cut loose and have fun.
At first, the party is lame, but then it really gets into gear. If I threw a party like this, I would absolutely be in a serious amount of trouble, even at my age!
I definitely identified with this movie. Not because my siblings and I would throw wild parties like the Ellis sisters, but because I am not looking forward to the day my parents sell their house and tell me to come get all my stuff. See, I left quite a bit of my stuff behind. Not because I don’t want it, I just don’t have room for it in my house and it’s better off in my childhood bedroom than in storage. Personally, I am dreading this day and pray that it never comes.
If you go see Sisters please leave the kids at home. There were some children in the screening I was at and there was a lot of inappropriate material. It made for a hilarious movie though, for adults that is. It is a good alternative for non-Star Wars fans . . . I know there are some of you out there!
