Cast: David Spade, Lauren Lapkus, Nick Swardson
Swift shot: Has David Spade found himself a new, sexy Chris Farley? Yes. Let’s hope we see more of this pair together.
When I saw “Happy Madison” I knew this was gonna be funny, and good, unlike Uncut Gems.
Finally, a new comedy that really just doesn’t give any fucks. It takes the classic switchero gag and hammers it down your throat the whole movie. When you think, oh man, they can’t possibly get any more crass or ridiculous with this character, they toss more comedy chum in.
David Spade plays moderately successful every-man, Tim Morris. Tim’s smart and straight-laced, but his ex-fiancee cheated on him. He’s working on getting over it with the help of his biggest cheerleader, the head of HR, Nate (Swardson).
Meanwhile, Tim’s loneliness has led him to agreeing to a blind date with Missy (Lapkus). She is a real character! Her introduction is one that will be talked about and probably imitated for at least a few years. It was a simple, yet effective way to show us just how fucking insane Missy is.
The premise is that due to a texting mishap, Tim invites the wrong Missy to a mandatory company retreat to Hawaii. He thinks she is some smoking hot Melissa that he has been telling Nate and his boss, Jack Winstone (Geoff Pierson) all about. Jack is a family man, and he’s going to be making a big promotion decision after the Hawaii trip.
Tim’s only real competition is Jess (Jackie Sandler), a ruthless career woman who has no compunctions with ruining Tim to get what she wants.
That’s all the setup you need about story, because, let’s be honest, you don’t give a fuck about the story, you just want to forget this bullshit pandemic and fucking laugh!
Good news, you chose the right Missy for the job.
Lauren Lapkus is fearless in every way. Her physical commitment to her craft can only be described as a modern Ziegfeld girl on meth. She’s got this glorious, goofy giraffe energy that will become her new brand. And to think, I first saw her in Orange is the New Black as a feeble prison guard who had no business working in such a hostile place. But drop this Missy in with those ladies — different story altogether.
With tons of shitball insane scenes and dialog, I will be stealing comebacks, one-liners, and insults from The Wrong Missy forever.
