A quirky romantic comedy, What If stars Harry Potter, oh, I mean Daniel Radcliffe and Zoe Kazan as Wallace and Chantry, best friends with an unusual relationship. Wallace has recently broken up with his longtime girlfriend, dropped out of medical school, and he lives in the attic at his sister’s house and when he first meets Chantry, there is instant chemistry. Unfortunately Chantry has a boyfriend, Ben (Rafe Spall), and they live together, so it’s pretty serious. Too bad Chantry didn’t tell Wallace right away that she is in a relationship. Now Wallace is in a tricky predicament – does he confess his true feelings to Chantry, or just stay in the friendzone?
I thought the actors gave satisfactory performances and although the storyline was somewhat predictable, there was enough going on to keep my attention. What If also stars Adam Driver (Girls) as Wallace’s college roommate/best friend Allan, Mackenzie Davis as Allan’s girlfriend Nicole, and Megan Park as Chantry’s sister Dalia. Some of my favorite scenes were between Wallace and Allan. Their guy banter while discussing each other’s relationships was rather amusing. I also enjoyed interactions between Chantry and Dalia. Unfortunately, Chantry and Ben, did not have much chemistry together.
While doing research for my review, I learned that the original title for this movie was The F Word but was changed to the less-edgy What If. I wouldn’t run out to see this one in theaters, but it would be a good one to watch on a rainy Saturday. One thing I did learn about in this movie was something called Fool’s Gold. I looked it up on Wikipedia so it must be true. It’s a sandwich that Elvis loved which is a loaf of French bread covered in butter and baked in the oven until brown. Then the loaf is sliced lengthwise and scooped out and filled with peanut butter on one side, jelly on the other side, then stuffed with a pound of cooked bacon slices. Smush both sides together, slice it up, and enjoy!! So here at Film Grouch, not only do you get a film review, you also get a recipe!!
