Seize the day!!
That’s the theme of the latest goofy high school comedy, “I Love You Beth Cooper”.
When it starts, we see the graduating class of Buffalo Glenn High School’s valedictorian, Dennis Cooverman (Paul Rust) about to give his commencement speech. This is where (on the advice of his best friend) he proceeds to declare his love for Beth Cooper (Hayden Panettiere), the most popular girl in school, cheerleader, insert cliche. He also hurls some insults at Beth’s boyfriend Kevin (Shawn Roberts), who could be a stand-in for Seann William Scott. Dennis then proceeds to diss the bitchiest girl in his class, and accidentally ‘outs’ a fellow student. Dennis’ best friend Rich (Jack Carpenter) was personally my favorite character. He was a major movie buff and was constantly quoting other movies. Throughout the flick, Dennis believes Rich is gay, which he continually denies. That question is finally put to a vote at the end of the film, and let’s just say it will leave a mark.
Dennis throws a post-graduation bash at his house, and he invites Beth Cooper and her friends, Cammy and Treece (Lauren London and Lauren Storm) who are the ONLY PEOPLE that show up. Here we have some uncomfortable moments where Dennis and Rich are trying to be “the cool guys” in front of the ladies and it’s just not working. Painful, just painful. Speaking of painful, Dennis has some problems opening a champagne bottle, but it’s nothing that a few frozen waffles can’t help!! You’ll see . . .
There were a few gross-out moments, one involving a large pile of cow dung and another including super-absorbent tampons. There was some buzz on the internet about Hayden Panettiere showing her bare butt in the movie, but (pun intended) there was no bare butt shown, sorry guys . . . only side-boob.
The end left me unsatisfied, it felt like something was left unfinished. (And no, there were no extra scenes after the credits). Overall, it was nothing that hadn’t been done before. If you’re a fan of silly high school comedies you’ll probably like this movie.
