In a word, this film was unique from start to fin. Not since my youth have I seen so many bold concepts thrown out to an audience without apology or trying too hard to make it politically correct that by the time it gets sent to the public, it is a toned-down, homogenized mess. You won’t find that with Igor, in fact, I will wager you will be shocked at the film’s progressive themes. There are clearly adult themes rampant throughout the movie, which should keep even the most bored parents attention. There are strong, sexually progressive themes and even suicide is thrown into the mix – this isn’t Finding Nemo, folks!
The main theme is clear though and well developed. A fearless soul can accomplish anything, and roles are only limited by our design. Let no one determine your path, and let no one demand you call them master. We are masters of our own destiny, and never be afraid to question authority. In fact, I think the message with Igor may have been a little less than subtle, it is your duty to question authority, lest you allow the entire realm to suffer just because it has always been so.
The casting was spot on for this animated tale, John Cusack and Molly Shannon were just perfect. Not once did I think of these two tucked away in some sound studio doing take after take without any facetime between them. This film is layered as well, I imagine seeing it two or three times you could easily pick up on things missed before. Â Without giving anything away, pay close attention to the names of characters, places, things…just everything. For example, the evil scientist, the really evil scientist that is, goes by the name Schadenfreude played by the ever maniacal Eddie Izzard. Go ahead, Google Schadenfreude, I’ll wait. Back? Good, you learned something today.
The best part of this film is that while it was arguably made for children, it wasn’t rife with cheesy songs thrown in every seven minutes where the character has to sing to us their GOTE. Go ahead, look that one up too, that is my little plug for James Lipton who has a small cameo. Wow, you learned two things today, no Igor you!
I suspect this film will be one of those that kids of today will be searching for on ebay when they hit their 30s wondering if they can get it anymore. It will be one of those little hidden treasures with which they identify kindred spirits. I would LOVE to hear your feedback after you see this movie, and just to be clear, I really think you should see this movie.
