Decent fantasy movie, probably one step away from a kiddy movie, but still decent. This film captures the life of a down-to-earth girl with the face of a pig, an old family curse dooms her to be different until one of her own kind (a blue blood) loves her with all their heart. The message is nice, it is about acceptance and following your heart despite your status or shortcomings. Christina Ricci does a fine job as the title character, but in some places where the rest of the world is going insane around her, she is a little too rigid, I can’t believe someone with an emotionally crippled mother (Catherine O’Hara) and a disfiguration would come out so pragmatic and stoic in the face of chaos. But, that is why it is a fantasy I guess.
A nosy reporter won’t let the past die and tries to reveal Penelope’s secret to the world; her very existence. The part is played wonderfully by Peter Dinklage who carries a few of the more serious scenes with his incredible acting. James McAvoy plays opposite Ricci to play the part of the dreamy scoundrel who finds his heart after meeting Penelope. Don’t expect to be passionately driven by this movie, but do expect a nice little surprise ending, maybe two if you aren’t paying attention closely.
Check out Penelope, rent it when you are looking for something to watch in between serious passionate romances and fluffy children’s movies.
